Effective Shopping with a Home Theater Comparison Shopping Site

There are a lot of things that can go wrong when you’re shopping for your future home theater.

You could get overcharged without knowing it, buy incompatible home theater audio visual equipment, or end up with a system that’s not at all in accordance with your preferences.

Here’s what you should do to have an easy and productive time shopping for home theater equipment, décor, and other related items.

FIRST TIME BUYER’S GUIDE – If you really have no idea on how to start constructing a home theater, most comparison shopping sites will offer you introductory articles or first time buyer’s guides to let you know the basic parts of a home theater.

HOME THEATER IN A BOX VS SEPARATE HOME THEATER COMPONENTS – Home theater comparison shopping sites also offer you a list of pros and cons for choosing between a home theater in a box versus separate home theater components. Generally speaking, a home theater in a box system is the more user-friendly and affordable option while buying separate components is the more professional option.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS – For each piece of equipment you’re interested in, it will usually be accompanied with a number of customer reviews. Take them with a grain salt. They may have actual experience using the equipment, but you can’t be sure you’re getting the right picture.

COMPARISON CHARTS – If you’re lucky, you’ll come across a home theater comparison shopping site that offers you a comparison chart. This is a valuable guide because it allows you to know which brands offer exactly what you’re looking for. Its format will usually place different brands on one side and important features on another. They’ll place check marks for every feature a brand possesses.

BEST AND THE WORST – Sometimes, shopping sites will offer a list of the best and worst brands in a particular product line. Read this especially if you’re interested in building a purely high-end, mid-end, or low-end home theater system.

PRICES AND RATES – Most importantly of all, home theater comparison shopping sites also offer you a wide range of prices to include brand new and second hand home theater items of various brands.

Q&A:

Question by Mike M: Question about surround sound?
My HDTV guide says “5.1 CH audio is available when the TV is connected to an external device supporting 5.1 CH”

But it also says “When the tv is receiving a DTV signal, the TV will send 5.1 CH sound to the Home Theatre Receiver.

When the source is a digital component such as DVD/cable box/satellite receiver and is connected to the TV via HDMI, only 2 CH audio will be heard from the Home Theatre receiver. If you want to hear 5.1 CH audio, connect the digital audio out jack from your DVD/Satellite directly to an amplifier or Home Theater”

Can anyone decipher what exactly this means? I’ve got everything running through the TV to the Home Theatre receiver via optical audio and they’re all going to the TV via HDMI

So am I still getting 2 CH sound part of the time?

The Home Theatre Receiver has several different settings and I’ve got it on dolby digital which seems to translate any audio into surround anyway….just wondering if I’m losing quality with my Dish Network/Xbox 360 audio b/c of what the manual states

Yes you are losing quality. You want to go from each device (Dish, DVD) directly into your receiver digitally. Which means, connect either a digital coaxial or optical directly from your device into the receiver. If you do this, you will definitely notice a difference.
